Saudi Thriller "Night Courier" Captures the Flipside of Riyadh’s Rapid Transformation

Saudi Arabia: In a significant cultural development, the Saudi film industry continues to make waves with Night Courier, a gripping thriller that provides a rare glimpse into the fast-paced urban life of Riyadh.

Directed by Ali Kalthami, the film stars Mohamad Aldokhei as Fahad, a call center worker who takes on night shifts as a delivery man to support his family. His choice to deliver alcohol—an illegal but lucrative business in the country—catapults him into the high-society circles of Riyadh’s partying elite, offering a stark contrast to his humble beginnings.

Set against the backdrop of Riyadh's rapid urbanization, the film tackles themes of poverty, social disparity, and the black market, all while exploring the tension between traditional values and modern-day pressures. The movie has already become a major success in Saudi cinemas, with over 600,000 sales since its release, marking a historic milestone for Saudi cinema, which only saw the re-opening of theaters in 2017.

Kalthami, who grew up in one of Riyadh’s poorer districts, said the film is based on his personal experiences and reflects the harsh realities of life in the kingdom. Despite the social commentary, Night Courier stays within the limits set by Saudi authorities, offering a controlled form of cultural openness that doesn't undermine the country’s image.

With a booming film industry and increasing support from the government, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a cultural powerhouse, and Night Courier serves as a testament to the changing face of the country’s cinema.
